Description

If you’re looking to escape the crowds, Baslow Edge is an excellent choice. Often overlooked in favour of neighbouring Curbar and Gardom’s, it offers a fine collection of quality boulders scattered along the edge. The Walnut and Matterhorn Boulders alone make it well worth a visit.

Like most Peak gritstone venues, Baslow dries quickly after rain and benefits from afternoon sun. However, its exposed position means conditions can deteriorate quickly in strong winds and poor weather.

History

Climbers have been exploring Baslow edge for nearly 100 years. Many of the edge’s routes were established during the 1940s and 1950s by pioneers such as Eric Byne and his contemporaries. Bouldering development followed in the 1970s and continues today, with new problems still being added. While it lacks the fame of its neighbours, Baslow remains a rewarding venue for those willing to look beyond the classics.
