Monte Covolo is a beautiful limestone cliff located near Villanuova sul Clisi, at the entrance of the Lake Garda region. It offers a wide variety of climbing styles, from technical vertical walls and dihedrals to powerful overhangs on the more difficult lines.
The crag is divided into four main sectors:
• Settore Basso - Zio Miky: The most prominent part of the cliff, featuring a high red and white wall with impressive overhangs. It hosts 20 routes (4b to 8a+) where endurance and technique are paramount. Notable lines include Esotica, Leopatra, and technical challenges like Zio Miky and Ni So Là.
• Settore Intermedio - Blade Runner: A triangular wall with 10 routes (6b to 7b+). The central routes are higher while more bouldery on the sides. The best lines are Blade Runner, Il volo del Mario, Tuxedo.
• Settore Alto - La Regina del Covolo: One of the most frequented areas with 25 lines (5b to 7c+). It offers a mix of overhangs and roofs on the left side and technical slabs on the right part. Best routes are Il pilone, Directe du Boucher, Regina del Covolo, Capriccio Arabo, Minù and Pilù.
• Settore Altissimo - El Ghiro: A small sector on a 25-meter pillar with 5 lines (3 to 6b+). It is rarely visited due to the uncomfortable approach. The best line is El Ghiro, which the sector is named after, but it also warns the climber that there might be dormice in the holes in the wall.
The exposure makes Covolo ideal for warm periods; the wall stays in the shade until early afternoon, perfect for summer mornings. Spring and autumn are also good, while winter is often too cold and damp.
Be prepared for "sandbagged" grades, typical of the Brescia area. Bolting consists of inox fix, handmade anchors, some nails, and rivets; resin bolts are present on some routes.
The base is very comfortable at Settore Basso (with benches) but more rugged in other sectors.
Rest Days/Nearby: The site is archaeologically significant: Neolithic remains (burials, pottery, arrowheads) were found at the base of the leftmost walls. You can visit these finds at the MABS (Museo Archeologico della Valle Sabbia) in Gavardo. For a rest day, explore the Salò promenade, the Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone Riviera, or enjoy the local Val Sabbia gastronomy, such as Bagoss cheese and Casoncelli.

Monte Covolo è una bellissima parete di ottimo calcare situata nei pressi di Villanuova sul Clisi, alle porte del Lago di Garda.
Offre un'arrampicata varia che si districa su muri verticali tecnici, diedri e anche strapiombi più fisici.
La falesia è divisa in quattro settori:
• Settore Basso - Zio Miky: La parte più a sinistra, con un'alta parete rossa e bianca sovrastata da grandi strapiombi. Conta 20 vie (4b - 8a+) dove dominano resistenza e tecnica. Include anche tre interessanti brevi multipitch. Vie consigliate: Esotica, Leopatra e le sfide di dita Zio Miky e Ni So Là.
• Settore Intermedio - Blade Runner: Parete triangolare con 10 vie (6b - 7b+). Le vie centrali sono più lunghe, i lati più boulderosi. Le vie consigliate sono Blade Runner, Il volo del Mario, Tuxedo.
• Settore Alto - La Regina del Covolo: Settore molto frequentato con 25 linee (5b - 7c+) e alcuni secondi tiri. A sinistra ci sono strapiombi e tetti, a destra placche. Le vie consigliate sono Il pilone, Directe du Boucher, Regina del Covolo, Capriccio Arabo, Minù e Pilù.
• Settore Altissimo - El Ghiro: Piccolo pilastro di 25m con 5 vie (3 - 6b+). Poco frequentato per l'accesso scomodo. La via principale è El Ghiro, che dà il nome alla parete e avverte gli scalatori della possibile presenza di ghiri nei buchi della parete!
L'esposizione NW/W rende il Covolo ideale per i periodi caldi (ombra fino al primo pomeriggio). Ottimo nelle mezze stagioni, troppo freddo e umido in inverno.
La gradazione è severa ("sandbagged"), tipica del bresciano. La chiodatura prevede fix inox e artigianali, qualche chiodo e rivetto; alcune vie hanno fittoni resinati.
La base è comodissima al Settore Basso con panchine, più scomoda altrove.
Attività Extra: Il sito è d'interesse archeologico: alla base delle pareti a sinistra sono stati trovati insediamenti neolitici con sepolture e vasellame. I reperti sono al MABS (Museo Archeologico della Valle Sabbia) a Gavardo. Per i giorni di riposo, consigliamo il lungolago di Salò, il Vittoriale degli Italiani o la cucina locale (formaggio Bagoss e Casoncelli).
