Description

One of the best venues in the Peak District for both bouldering and traditional climbing, Cratcliffe offers a diverse range of routes across all grades, making it ideal for climbers of every ability.

Cratcliffe sits up high and can be pretty exposed to the wind… but that does mean it dries quickly after rain. There are also plenty of boulders scattered amongst the trees, making it a good option in the summer as well.

Just a short walk away is Robin Hood’s Stride, another classic bouldering spot set in a peaceful, scenic location. Together, these crags provide a fantastic variety of problems and routes from beginner-friendly slabs to more challenging lines for seasoned climbers.

With flat landings, steady approaches, and a tranquil setting, this area is also well-suited for families and kids. Whether you’re after a laid-back day on grit or a more adventurous outing, this corner of the Peaks delivers.

History

The first recorded traditional route at this crag dates back to 1897, with Owen Jones’ Weston Chimney (VDiff)… so it’s safe to say climbing here goes back a long way.

In more recent times, the crag has become very popular for bouldering, with some of the best climbers of the 80s and 90s leaving their mark on the place.
